In order for children to achieve their full potential, they need to learn to acknowledge, communicate and control their emotions, impulses and behaviour. Research suggests that such skills are aspects of emotional intelligence and emotional literacy which can be developed from the earliest age as part of a long term program.
Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., a well-known psychologist has identified five basic elements of Emotional Intelligence:
- self-awareness,
- managing emotions,• motivating oneself,
- empathy and social skills.
Crescent Early Enrichment Centre (CRESCENTEEC) aims to provide a "Heart Start" program for children from 2 to 4 years of age. It aims to facilitate an environment where:
- parents, children and the early childhood professional can work together;
- children gain confidence to work independently, in a pair or as a group with no separation anxiety;
Thus, they are more at ease when it is time for them to enter school for they have had the window of opportunity to develop their emotional and academic learning skills needed for school with their parents which can also be further extended at home.
CRESCENTEEC is inspired by the philosophies of:
- Dr Maria Montessori and the Reggio Emilia approach
